Did you know that WHEEL (parent organization of our women’s shelter) gathers with Church of Mary Magdalene to hold “
Women in Black” silent vigils every time a homeless individual dies on the streets of
Seattle?
The vigils began in May 2000 and are held to honor the lives of those who have died as well as to draw visibility to the issue. When they learn of a death, they gather the following Wednesday at noon at the
SeattleJustice Center (5
th and Cherry), where they stand in silent vigil for an hour. Supporters also leaflet passersby with information about the vigil and how the community, working together, can solve homelessness. To join the phone/email notification list for the vigils, call WHEEL at 206-956-0334 or email
wheelorg@yahoo.com.
WOMEN IN BLACK VIGIL NOON WEDNESDAY JUNE 3rd:WHEEL/Church of Mary Magdalene Women in Black will be standing Vigil outside the Seattle Justice Center (5th/Cherry) from noon to 1 PM next Wednesday, June 3rd.We’ll be standing for Daniel Dunn, 46. They learned of Mr Dunn’s death from multiple deeply disturbing news reports. He’s the homeless man who was set on fire outside a Parkland fast food restaurant on March 12th. He died at Harborview Hospital on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25th, of injuries related to being burned. Police are investigating this as homicide. Shockingly, they've stood vigil at least twice before in similar circumstances--a homeless person set on fire outside of King County who was airlifted to the renowned Burn Ward at Harborview and died there.
At least 22 homeless people have died outside or by violence already in 2015, but we know there will be many more names and many more people to mourn and remember when we receive the new MEs Homeless Death List, which has been unexpectedly delayed for more than a month. Please join our Vigil on June 3rd, and please stay in touch with us!
