On Saturday, February 1, our neighbors at High Point's Neighborhood House, have invited us to attend their monthly West Seattle Meaningful Movies event. This month's movie is called "Broken on All Sides" and takes a look at racism and the criminal justice system. The movie asks if mass incarceration become the “new Jim Crow”? It states that much of the discrimination that was legal in the Jim Crow era is still perfectly legal when applied to "criminals", positing that people of color are being targeted at significantly higher rates for stops, searches, arrests, prosecution, and harsher sentences. In this film, people on many sides of the criminal justice system explore a topic often walled-off from public scrutiny.
Arrive at 6:30pm for free snacks and a chance to meet your neighbors. The movie will start at 7:00pm. Neighborhood House is located 6400 Sylvan Way SW, Seattle 98126 (on the 21 and 128 bus routes). There is no charge for this event but donations are gratefully received.
