Did you know that WHEEL (parent organization of our women’s shelter) gathers with Mary’s Place (an empowerment ministry for women and children) to hold “Women in Black” silent vigils every time a homeless individual dies on the streets of Seattle? The vigils began in May 2000 and are held to honor the lives of those who have died as well as to draw visibility to the issue. When they learn of a death, they gather the following Wednesday at noon at the Seattle Justice Center (5
th and Cherry), where they stand in silent vigil for an hour. Supporters also leaflet passersby with information about the vigil and how the community, working together, can solve homelessness. Sadly, this year Women in Black is bearing witness to the highest rate of homeless deaths that they’ve seen in their 15-year history. Already this year, 20 homeless men and women have died outside or by violence. To join the phone/email notification list for the vigils, call WHEEL at 206-956-0334 or email
