A message from The Washington StateCatholic Conference: "Last month, the Vatican released a new encyclical by
Pope Francis that centers on the challenge of climate change. The title is Laudato Si' (On Care for Our Common Home). Congress is considering several bills that address ways to mitigate climate change, including grants to non-profits to make energy efficient improvements, limiting carbon pollution from power plants, and aid to developing nations to enable them to adapt to climate change impacts.
The
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (
USCCB) is urging that any legislative action on climate change include provisions that:
Ease the burden on low-income communities and those who live in poverty;
Offer relief for workers who may be displaced because of climate change policies; and
Promote the development and use of alternate renewable and clean-energy resources, including the transfer of such technologies and also technical assistance that may be appropriate and helpful to developing countries in meeting the challenges of climate change.
