Have you seen the Seattle Seafarers’ Center, located along the Duwamish Waterway underneath the West Seattle Bridge? This is a ministry with merchant seafarers from around the world and serves over 20,000 ship workers each year! They are currently in need of volunteers to provide hospitality with this often invisible, yet crucial population who work in one the world’s most stressful and lonely occupations. As a volunteer, you can board ships to visit with seafarers and bring them supplies, provide transportation to various shopping and tourist destinations, and/or serve as a center host and welcome visiting seafarers. You can also volunteer from home by sewing “ditty bags” or knitting hats for the workers. To find out more, visit the Seattle Seafarers’ Center website at www.mts-seattle.org or contact Cristi Chapman at [email protected].
