Dear Friends,
As the horrific events in Aleppo unfold on our TV screens, many of us are struggling with a sense of helplessness and dismay, asking “What can I do”? The reality of what Syria has become, and the depth of suffering endured by Syrians as I write, is unimaginable and not meant for any human being to endure.
While we can feel far removed from the crisis, I want you to know that you have people on the ground who are right now — and have been over the past five years — working on your behalf on the front lines of where Syrian refugees are fleeing for help. In countries like Jordan, Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and Europe, CRS emergency responders and the local Catholic Church are providing life-saving food and medical assistance, shelter and living supplies, education for children, and trauma counseling to help refugee families grieve and heal. With the unwavering presence of our local Church partners, your CRS teams are adapting emergency support to meet the rapidly-changing environment. Just as importantly, they are showing solidarity and love for people in dire need of it.
With children making up more than 50% of the refugee population, their access to education and to services that support their healing and recovery are all vital to their future wellbeing.
This weblink helps you connect with the latest information, stories and diverse ways to stay engaged, and help.
As we go into a holiday season in which messages of comfort and joy abound, please pray that the Syrian people will know these one day soon, surrounded by their loved ones, in a safe place, with hope for their futures.
